Alkmaar is close to the Kruger National Park. The Kruger sustains 147 species of mammal, 112 species of reptile (including 50 of snake), 34 of amphibian, 49 of fish (including the 'living fossil' lungfish and an ocean-living shark found in one of the rivers) and nearly 230 species of butterfly. For the bird-watcher, the park has special appeal: more than 530 avian species have been identified, among them ostrich, African fish eagle, vulture, bateleur, secretary bird, owl, hawk, francolin, hornbill and korhaan. The birds of prey are especially impressive.
