On the outskirts of one of the most beautiful parts of the Cape West Coast, Yzerfontein, you’ll find yourself on the Blombosch 4x4 Nature Trail where you can experience all that the Sandveld region has to offer. The route is 13.5km long and will take about 2 hours to navigate and only 15 vehicles are allowed on the course at a time. The drive is not meant to be a 4x4 challenge, but rather a nature experience, as it’s name suggests.
This is a great trail if you’re a beginner to the world of 4x4 driving as the opposite of what happens to most 4x4 trails in the Western Cape happens here. Instead of soft and slippery mud during the winter months these sandy roads become firmer in the rainy season making it easier to traverse while in the summer months you’ll enjoy a different type of driving challenge with deep sand in some places.
Stop for a picnic halfway through your trail at the Aagpat campsite which also has a toilet. You can even enjoy a short walk from this point should you need to stretch your legs. The area boasts lowveld fynbos, gorgeous sea views, old dune vegetation, limestone ridges and natural saltpans. The trail is graded 1 to 2 and is a must visit for 4x4 enthusiasts.
