It’s an intriguing question: if you could visit just one off-road destination this year, where would you end up going? We put this question to our regular advertisers as well as some of our friends in the overland field. Their answers make for great reading and should hopefully inspire your travel plans.

Kgalagadi Pans & Moremi, Botswana

If there were only one place I could go to this year, it would be Botswana, and my favourite destination, Moremi National Park. Moremi is a 4x4er’s paradise. In the summer months, you can’t drive 400 m without going through water. There is also the delta with all its water, and there are many roads and tracks that cross all this water. For me, a hard-core 4x4 enthusiast, there is nothing better. I remember two years ago when I was driving to Dead Tree Island, and the Delta had filled up so that the track we were on was under water. All we could see were the long reeds sticking out on either side of the track. We drove for 500 m through water that was between 800 mm and 1 m deep.

Thrilling stuff.

For the animal lover, there is an abundance of game. Every time we go there, we see almost all the animals. Because of all the water, Moremi is also very green, and it just makes me feel that I’m far away in the jungle. What is also a great adventure is to hire a boat at Xakanaxa Camp and go into the Delta, to explore and to see the great diversity of game and birds. The camping is absolutely the best: wild open camps with the Big 5 roaming free and passing through on a nightly basis. (This does mean you have to be vigilant at all times, especially if you have children.) So, if I can wangle a week off this year, you know where I’ll be heading. Moab, Utah, USA

If I could, I would go to Moab to attend the largest gathering of Jeeps in the world – everybody ‘wheels’ for 10 days. Pretty close to heaven.
