In Pitbull 4WD Series talk, it’s called the Battle of the North, and it kicked off with a bang on February 28 at the Loch Ness venue in Onderstepoort, Pretoria. There were 78 entrants and over 600 spectators getting their fill of adrenaline, dust and exhaust fumes at this family-oriented 4×4 challenge series that has a place for everybody – from the mild-mannered city guy with his new bakkie, to the hardcore rock-crawler fraternity.

Now in its second year, the Pitbull Series has implemented a new scoring structure at each obstacle, making for some entertaining and sometimes spectacular results. The entrants had the option of choosing an Easy, Difficult or Pro line at each obstacle, upping the chances of improving their final score. The vehicle classes include RC Crawler, Buggy, Standard Production, Street Locker, Pro Locker, Modified, Super Modified and Pro Truck.

Most of the obstacles were quite technical in nature, ensuring that every team had to stay fully focused – there was no plain-sailing through obstacles on this event. Entrants varied in skill from daily drivers to National champions, though it was clear all were enjoying using their vehicles for their intended purpose.
