The Iveco Daily 4×4 was launched a few years ago in foreign markets, but, owing to SA’s poor-quality diesel, this versatile truck never made it to our shores.

Now, however, the Daily 4×4 has been fitted with a Euro 3 engine that will happily run on 500 ppm diesel, thus paving the way for this multipurpose truck to be in Africa. In terms of market position, the Daily 4×4 is said to be the smallest of the off-road trucks in this sector – noticeably smaller than the Unimog. Amongst its many features, the Daily 4×4 sports a truck-derived chassis on parabolic leaf springs and solid axles front and rear. These qualities allow the Daily 4×4 to carry a payload capacity of 5.5 tons, while providing ample wheel travel for off-road traction.

Furthermore, the Daily 4×4’s off-road credentials are helped along by its hugely impressive approach-, ramp- and departure angles, of 51, 36 and 42° respectively. The truck also boasts a 620 mm wading depth (700 mm with a snorkel fitted), diff-locks front, centre and rear, two reduction gears, and a permanent 4WD system that operates in a 32 / 68 torque split – front to rear respectively.

On-road, the Daily 4×4 is powered by a frugal 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, capable of 105 kW and 350 Nm at just 1 400 rpm. This engine is coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission along with two low-range ratios, which means that you have the option of 24 forward gears and 4 reverse gears. (The crawler gear boasts a reduction ratio of 100 to 1). The Daily 4×4 is available in SC or DC form. The DC version will seat four adults comfortably on the rear bench seat, and another three, including the driver, up front.

Cabin ergonomics are exemplified by a dash-fitted gear lever, close-at-hand controls, ingress / egress grab handles, and an easy-to-reach storage compartment beneath the rear bench seat. On the safety front, the Daily 4×4 comes fitted with an arsenal of driver aids such as ABS, EBD, anti-slip regulation (ASR), engine braking control (MSR), ESP with trailersway mitigation (TSM), hydraulic brake assist (HBA), hill assist, load adaptive brake control (LAC), emergency braking hydraulic rear wheel boost (HRB), hydraulic fading compensation (HFC), and roll-over mitigation (RMI).

Die-hard overlanders will be interested to know that the Daily 4×4’s steel-beam chassis is perfectly flat on top, enabling body builders to bolt different types of load beds, bodies and camper units to the Daily 4×4’s structure. This can be done using special mounting points that guarantee maximum security and practicality.

For backup service, Iveco maintains an extensive network of service professionals: with 28 dealers and 40 service points throughout Southern Africa. The Daily 4×4 will be sold with a 2-year / unlimited kilometre warranty. Pricing starts at R634 353 for the SC model and R658 293 for the DC version.
