80 years on, Jeep owners continue the search for freedom, adventure and fun…

Since 1941, Jeep has delivered an open invitation to live life to the fullest. It has provided owners with a sense of security that their vehicle is built to handle any journey with confidence. When you purchase a Jeep, you become part of a lifestyle, you belong to the Jeep Tribe. Jeep is a love, representing the ability to get away from civilisation, a chance to get enjoyably dirty, the ability to drop the top and experience the open air, to drop the windshield and feel the wind on your face. Jeepers are passionate people who love freedom, adventure and fun!

Jeep ownership does come with certain responsibilities and one such responsibility is the Jeep Wave. It is a special greeting, that all Jeep owners use to acknowledge each other as they pass on the road. In essence, it consists of extending two or four fingers upward from the steering wheel when you pass another Jeep. There are various nuances to this, but new Jeepers quickly get the hang of it!

Moving beyond the wave, Jeep Owners now have a new way to connect with one another – it all started around July 2020. It’s silly, funny, makes no sense at all and perhaps needed in these unprecedented times. Enter #DuckDuckJeep. To duck a Jeep, you take a small rubber duck, attach a message to it (usually including #duckduckjeep) and deposit on a Wrangler. A colourful tribe indeed…

Forged in war and born in the heat of battle, the legendary history of Jeep is long and illustrious. A Jeep nicknamed “Old Faithful” was the first vehicle ever to be awarded the Purple Heart for “wounds” received – two shrapnel holes in its windshield gained whilst being shelled by a Japanese battleship on Guadalcanal. This Jeep survived two beach landings; it was the first to land on Guadalcanal and among the first during the Bougainville invasion. Old Faithful was retired after 18 months on December 22, 1943, having travelled more than 11,000 miles of jungle terrain in Bougainville as a command car for four different Marine Generals. These vehicles were heroes to thousands of Allied soldiers the world over.

Fierce emotional bonds often developed between a soldier and his Jeep. Soldiers raved about the vehicle and its versatility on the battlefield. The “Go Anywhere. Do Anything.®“ slogan was more than likely coined during this period where Jeeps delivered troops, supplies and even served as a weapons platform! Chaplains celebrated communion on the flat hood. Commanders used it to brief battle plans or stand atop it to address their troops. Former President and General Dwight Eisenhower is even alleged to have quipped that Jeep was one of a mere handful of advantages that won the war for the Allies. So, from the get-go, Jeep was full of character…

There are many of the original Willys Jeeps still in service… this one’s home is on the coast of the Western Cape.

“Is this object important? Did this change history?” This is a question that was asked before the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) included the 1953 “Jeep M-38A1 Utility Truck” in its Born out of Necessity display. Paul Galloway, the collection specialist at MoMA who oversees architecture and design, stated that “Increasingly over the years, we’ve come to see cars as objects with a multiplicity of meanings beyond just aesthetics. There’s engineering, of course, and how they tap into broader stories. It’s how they look, how they’re put together, and how they’re objects of industrial design but also great magnets of cultural history.” It is unsurprising that in 2018 the Society of Cult Brands awarded Jeep “cult status”.

Jeep has continued to evolve from those early days, going on to create a premium SUV segment, and the first automatic 4×4. The rest, as they say, is history…. and Jeep have been at the forefront of the revolution ever since!

Enter the future! The Jeep Brand doesn’t just look back, they look forward to the future of the brand and the future of the planet. Driven by the spirit of adventure, the evolution of the brand and products demonstrates that fun, freedom and a higher respect for the environment can go hand in hand. With this ethos, “Born to be Wild” became silent – without losing any of its force! Jeep truly has no limits – because freedom is the essence of who they are. The Jeep 4xe badge is a symbol that brings together the best of the Jeep world of yesterday and tomorrow, covering many models in the Jeep range.

They look to the future with ambition for Jeep to become a leader in technology for eco-friendly mobility. To focus on one model specifically, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe completed the whole Rubicon trail in full electric mode! It is the most technologically advanced and capable Wrangler ever, able to climb over tough obstacles and go an electrifying 0-100 km/h in 6 seconds. A plug-in hybrid turbocharged engine gives the Wrangler 4xe an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of instant torque for heart-pounding performance off-road and on-road. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe was named 2021 Green SUV of the Year by the industry leading publication ‘Green Car Journal’.

The New Jeep Renegade’s stylish looks are equally at home in the city as they are on a mountain pass. (Visual for illustration purposes only. Options and specifications may vary between models and country availability.)

When you decide to join the Jeep family, it is important to choose a dealership carefully – it is a relationship that is going to be in place for the lifetime of your vehicle. You want to find a dealership that places emphasis on not just good service, but also honesty, integrity, and forming long-term relationships with their customers. You also want a dealership that has the latest equipment, understands the Jeep brand and the lifestyle of their customers.

Now more than ever, a considered, meaningful way of living in this world is becoming top of mind. A vehicle is a significant investment and a very large part of one’s everyday life. As such, it should be more than simply getting from A to B. It should be an expression of who you are, how you choose to live and your way of being in this world. If Jeep resonates with these for you, please visit Grand Central Motors (a Super Group Dealership) to discuss your requirements with their sales team and test drive a Jeep of your choice.

Conveniently situated on the corner of New Road and Lever Road in Midrand, it has one of the most experienced Jeep teams in the country (the New Cars Sales Executive Team all have over 10 years of experience on the brand, with a collective experience of over half a decade). If you are located in another part of the country, they are more than happy to deliver a vehicle to you. Their dealership is fully equipped with the latest high-tech equipment used for servicing the technologically advanced brand that Jeep has become. But, perhaps most importantly, they offer an enthusiastic team that is passionate about the brand and ultimately lives the Jeep Lifestyle.

The next decision is: “Which incredible Jeep model should I be purchasing?” As space only permits a limited review here, we suggest that you rather visit the Grand Central Motors dealership and have a chat with their Jeep experts. That said, we have chosen to focus on the Jeep Wrangler JL in this article. Let’s be clear, the modern Wrangler is not a modern-day Willy’s Jeep – although the war horse DNA still runs deep, it is now a state of the art, hardcore off-roader with polite on-road manners. It has effectively distanced itself from all other SUVs. In fact, the Wrangler is in its own lane entirely.

How does one even begin to define the legendary Wrangler? A convertible? Tick. An off-road warrior? Double tick. A retro design that harkens back to the World War II-era military vehicle, with an array of creature comforts and a range of sophisticated powertrains? Absolutely! In fact, so advanced is the current Jeep Wrangler JL that the soldiers of WWII would likely have thought it a work of fiction. Making no apologies for the fact that it is quintessentially an off-road vehicle, it’s on-road manners have vastly improved!

The Jeep Wrangler JL is an entirely unique purchase, and that is part of its appeal. It has stayed true to its heritage whilst adding a level of finesse and refinement with the upgrades. Many modern materials which are both strong and light (such as aluminium) have been utilised to reduce the weight of the vehicle, which improved economy. Another example of this trend is the use of magnesium in the tailgate. The steering geometry has also been refined, enhancing your on-road driving experience. The refined drive systems on the vehicle now allow for permanent four wheel drive, which significantly increases on-road safety in all weather conditions.

During the war, the early Willys Jeep could be fitted with machine guns for combat, were widely modified for long-range desert patrols, snow plowing, telephone cable laying, saw milling, as fire-fighting trucks, field ambulances, tractors and, with suitable wheels, would even run on railway tracks! During the course of the war, customized field kits were developed for winter and desert conditions, deep-water fording and other combat needs. We’d like to believe that this was the beginning of the modern trend of modifying the iconic Wrangler. It is the only vehicle to successfully have its own, model-exclusive aftermarket scene that truly has distinguished itself from other similar vehicles – an entirely different world to most aftermarket modification communities. The sheer amount of options and availability you have as a Jeep owner to customize your Wrangler is impressive.

With additional OEM-approved modifications (Mopar), Wrangler owners can actually increase the value of their vehicle.

If you’re looking for a pre-owned Jeep, Grand Central Motors have a large range and receive stock on a regular basis, so don’t hesitate to give them a call. They will be more than happy to find you something suitable, enabling you to join the Jeep family. You’re also able to trade your existing vehicle in – so they really are a one stop solution!
