The larger 285/75 R16 tyres will fit on the standard 7JJ alloy rims on the 70 Series Cruiser, but you must be aware of clearance problems on the wheel arches at full lock if there is some wear on the front springs. And, while you might get slightly longer legs, there will be more wind resistance, thus negating any fuel-consumption benefits.
The margin of error on the speedometer will increase, and the odometer will also no longer be accurately calibrated. On the up side, the larger footprint will enhance braking ability and aid traction off-road.
Rather fit 255/85 R16 tyres which are narrower but offer better performance all-round, won’t foul the bodywork, offer a large air volume and won’t de-bead as readily as a 285 when aired-down.
Note that the diameter of a 265/70 R16 is 777.4mm (30.6 inches), a 285/75 R16 is 833.9mm (32.8 inches) and the 255/85 R16 is 839.9mm in diameter (33.1 inches).
The industry is not convinced about the 13% claimed fuel consumption benefit over the standard 265/70/R16, as claimed by Chris de Wet (February 2015 issue of SA4x4) after fitting 285/75/R16 tyres.
