I also want to know what people say on this – but it seems as if this community is extremely quiet…

Hi my name is John Van Wieringen I stay in Pinetown.
    My 4×4 is a 1992 Land Rover Defender 110 V8 (3.5l) Hi-Line
I have two deep cycle SABAT 674 FG batteries installed in the Landy’s battery compartment, the second battery is connected with a solenoid to the main battery.
I have a volt meter mounted in the dashboard.
The solenoid was originally mounted outside underneath the battery box.
All non essential circuits were connected to the auxiliary battery.
On the first day of our 16 week trip while we passed Kestell, the radio stopped playing.
I realised that the solenoid had failed, we detoured to Glen Reenen Rest Camp in the Golden Gate National Park, where we spent the Night.
The next morning all was ok I realised it was a heat problem, drove to Bethlehem Auto Electrical for R51.30 they relocated the relay to the inside the battery box.
Depending on your budget there are some very expensive deep cycle batteries.

The Solenoid in question was installed in 1995 prior to our 16 week trip, the only attention it required was to relocate, due to overheating, as mentioned before.

    The relay is a:-

Cole Hersee Continuous Duty Solenoid 12Volt 85 Amp SPST with Plated Steel Housing.

Best solenoid you can get. I also have one that had been going strong for about 20 years, with out missing a beat
