My wife and I recently purchased a Mahindra Scopio SUV S10. Initially, the attraction was the price as we are on a limited budget as Anglican Missionaries, but having recently returned from what was her maiden voyage to Namibia, we must say that she is everything and more we ever needed in a vehicle for our purposes. As we wanted to visit the priest in Luderitz, we decided to go through the Rigtersveld and to cross over at Sendlingsdrif. (We actually bought our first SA 4X4 magazine along the way for a quick crash course in how to drive a 4X4 vehicle!) For the most part, the gravel road was rather good; although there was a challenging section of boulder hopping that caught us off guard. But The Godmobile, as our US partners christened her, did not let us down once. In fact, she seemed to prefer thick sand (like at Sossosvlei) to tar! The ride was surprisingly smooth as well in spite of some bad corrugation. The steep mountain pass at Spreetshoogte made my wife want to faint, but not The Godmobile!
By the time we reached Windhoek, stopping to rest at some of the most unique and memorable camping spots we have yet encountered, she was due for her first service…the vehicle, not my wife. While finding the Mahindra dealer proved to be a wee bit of a challenge, the staff members were more than friendly and very helpful. We had a minor problem with dust intake on the way, but with a few adjustments and tightening of doors, they made that a problem of the past.
We work in several southern African countries and often have to drive to remote areas in the bush. We have experienced some of these roads and so we knew we needed something rugged, but we were also looking for something less taxing on the rear end on the long road. The Godmobile has proved to be exactly what we were looking for. We still would like to add a few extras to the vehicle in due time like a more rugged front bumper for a trip planned to northern Namibia next year and a roof top tent, but for now, we are more than happy.
