  I so enjoyed the article on Sutherland by Nick Yell on page 64 of the July 2017 issue of SA 4×4 magazine. We often make a detour to this magical mountaintop village on our way home after trips to the north. The R234 from Calvinia to Sutherland is well worth the detour. The old sheep herders’ pass from the barren plains up to Sutherland can really only be negotiated in a 4×4, and is also well worth the effort.
