I was intrigued to read the article, ‘TALL ORDER. Why giraffes stand out’, by Bryan Havemann on page 48 of the October 2017 issue of SA4x4, since it stimulated my interest in giraffes. Adult giraffe males weigh about 1200kg, reaching up to 1980 kilograms in Etosha National Park and in East Africa. Adult females weigh about 950 kilograms, but can also reach 1280 kilograms.

The giraffe, Giraffa camelopardalis, feeds on the fruit of the sausage tree, Kigelia Africana, and this pod can sometimes become lodged in its mouth and result in a condition known as ‘dysphagia’, as we found with this individual (pictured) in the Moremi National Park, in Botswana.
