I read with great interest your article on gravel-road driving. I am a very senior individual and have lots of gravel-road driving experience. However, my experience of 4×4 on gravel roads at higher speeds (80-100km/h) is that my vehicle is much more unstable in 4×4 than in 4×2 mode.
I have tried using 4 High on numerous occasions, and without exception the roadholding was much worse. Even my wife commented on it every time –
including on deep sandy roads like those in Botswana.
I might just mention that I drive a 2007 Ford Ranger Supercab with
205 000km on the clock. It has never let me down in Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Lesotho or Mozambique. I would like other opinions on this matter, as I have seen other articles which share your opinion.
