    You’ve already decided that your life needs some off-road adventure, or maybe the lure of an adventurous outdoor lifestyle is simply too strong to resist. But, out of the vast array of 4x4s and SUVs on offer in our market, which one will best suit your needs? Well, fear no more, because all your questions will be answered at the South African 4×4 & Outdoor show, to be held at the Zwartkops Raceway on 27- and 28 August 2016. You’ll have opportunity to put just about every offering to the test, acquire any accessory equipment you might need, and have a jolly good day out with your family at the same time.

    With vehicle- and equipment exhibitions by all the major manufacturers, where salespeople will be on hand to explain the virtues of their wares, you’ll first get a closer look at the products which really grab your attention: everything from off-road caravans, trailers and campers, through to fishing rods and camping gear will be on display. If you already have an off-roader, there’s bound to be some new accessory to improve your go-anywhere experience. And most importantly, you’ll also get to try out your favourite vehicle in various scenarios.

    You can test drive your favourite vehicle on the race track itself, where qualified marshals from Wolwekloof 4×4 Club will help regulate proceedings to ensure safety for the drivers and spectators alike. Once that’s done, you can head out to the level 4 off-road track in another area of the Zwartkops premises, where representatives from all the major off-road-capable manufacturers will be on hand to demonstrate their vehicles’ abilities, with marshals (this time from EBS 4×4 & Maxxis Tyres) again keeping a watchful eye on the action. To round off the experience, you can go also play on the skid pan, where instructors from Jaguar Land Rover Experience will coach you in controlling a 4×4 or SUV on a slippery surface. If you’re after something slightly more hard-core, you can also hitch a ride in one of the rock crawler buggies at their display, and ride along as they scurry over obstacles which would properly faze a mountain goat.

    There’s more to this show than only new vehicles, off-roading accessories and outdoor equipment, however, for there will be quite a number of fun activities, good food and some real spectacles to behold as well. Adventurous children (and young-at-heart adults) can amuse themselves at the bow- and air rifle shooting range, and there will be a laser tag course laid out for those with more modern tastes. Zwartkops’s world-class go-kart circuit will also see some good use, with karts available to rent for a few laps, all through the day.

    The track’s infield will play host to two unusual activities: a monster truck driving display will take place (well worth it, to see just what these extreme these brutes can drive over), and there will be a camel race (yes, with genuine camels) between the various exhibitors as well. The latter should prove to be quite interesting, especially seeing as camels aren’t exactly common on our soil, and it’s unlikely that many of the exhibitors will have any experience with these animals.

    And when you finally need a rest after all the excitement, you can relax with a cold brew at the beer tent. Just be aware that you can’t stop over here on your way to any track, as no alcohol-fuelled driving will be allowed. The show is open from 8 in the morning on both days, and closes at 17:00 on Saturday the 27th and 16:00 on Sunday the 28th. Entrance fees are R50 per child, R100 per adult, with pensioner’s entry discounted by R20 per person. That’s quite good value for money, even without the camel race and monster trucks, but with these novelties included, it becomes a downright bargain. See you at Zwartkops – we’ll be there!
