The Rooiberg Pass between Vanwyksdorp and Calitzdorp looks as if it’s about to be mothballed. From Vanwyksdorp’s imposing NG Kerk, one heads up the pass. The road is quite well maintained until the turn-off to the Rooiberg Lodge.

Drive in at the Lodge’s sign, and Henri or Ronel will entertain and feed you. If you arrive in the early morning or late afternoon, Zebra and Nyala can usually be seen on the lush green lawns since their natural browsing vegetation has suffered in the drought. Pass ostriches sheltering their chicks, and through the derelict Dwarsin- die-Weg farm.

At the top of the pass, there is a sign that gives the altitude, and another faded sign proclaiming ‘BUILDING RENOVATED ROAD’.

I’d say that it is still in need of renovation before you drive it in your low-slung sedan. Soon one descends to views across the Olifants River valley to the Swartberg Mountains.
