I emailed you previously about your articles on the V6 Amarok, asking for a “shootout” between at least the Hilux D/C 4×4 or the Ford D/C 4×4 and the Amarok V6 as I did not think your article and YouTube Clip were the ultimate off-road test. You read my mind, and your September issue has just that.

It is now clear to me that VW’s parent company is sitting with hundreds of V6 diesel engines that they can’t use in Europe or America as they are banned, so has decided to dump them in SA and, with a good PR job, sell them for R100 000 more in the Amarok than the average 4×4 D/C bakkies – yet they don’t even have low range, and ground clearance is an issue if you are going to do the tough stuff!

I visited my local VW dealer to enquire about the V6 Amarok, and after a lot of BS from the salesman I discovered that to fit 17-inch rims will cost an extra R7000. They also told me that a company called Seikel does VWapproved accessories for the V6, but, as your article says, max lift is only 25mm. Also, the V6 must use 50ppm diesel.

I know nothing about the bakkie market, but if I was bringing a new upgrade to the market I would make sure that it is best in its class and that it is better than either the Ford Ranger or Toyota Hilux D/C 4×4, which I think everybody will agree are the leaders of the pack, with the rest of the competitors close on their heels.

What I would like to see is the V6 Amarok’s on-road performance mated to the Hilux’s off-road ability, and I think that the only place you will find that is the Toyota Land Cruiser 200. But, as they say, “you can’t have your cake and eat it.”

Thanks for clearing up where the V6 Amarok sits when compared to its rivals.
