In the realm of off-roading, there are enthusiasts, and then there’s Alison Grunewald, a born daredevil who has redefined the possibilities of overland journeys. Hailing from Honeydew, South Africa, Grunewald embarked on a convoy expedition that is evidence of grit, determination, and her boundless passion for exploration.

Setting her course on 12 July 2022, Grunewald, a skilled self-employed photographer, took the wheel of her striking custom pink Land Rover Defender. This bold endeavour spanned an astounding 23 countries in just three and a half months, culminating in her triumphant arrival in the UK on 21 October 2022. While fellow Land Rover enthusiasts joined her on segments of the journey, it was her unwavering spirit that truly set her apart.

However, this wasn’t Grunewald’s first voyage in the world of epic road trips. Having shared the joys of overlanding with her late partner, Allan, their mutual passion ignited a thirst for even more adventure. “Upon completing one overlanding trip, we immediately started planning the next,” she reminisced. Their shared love for exploration led to the acquisition of a 2000 Land Rover Defender 110 TD5 in November 2014. Tragedy struck when Alan passed away unexpectedly in December 2018, but this setback didn’t deter Grunewald. Undaunted by the loss, she embarked on the journey they had envisioned, bolstered by the support of friends and family. It was during this poignant expedition to Botswana that her steadfast determination transformed her into a proficient and independent 4×4 enthusiast.

Moreover, the lockdown of 2020 presented Grunewald with an opportunity to reshape her inherited Land Rover to reflect her personality and passions. Meticulously stripping it down to the chassis, she bestowed upon it a vibrant custom pink coat that stood as a symbol of her individuality. The vehicle underwent meticulous reconstruction, featuring practical upgrades such as a 2” lift, additional fuel and water tanks, a rooftop tent, ARB compressor, rear lockers, and a Warn winch. This transformation went beyond mechanics; it was a manifestation of her profound connection to her vehicle.

Notable sponsors including Autobarn, Sabat, Phillips, Wynn’s, and Olemera Financial Solutions, backed Grunewald’s journey. Embarking on her journey from Chartwell, South Africa, she ventured into uncharted territories, conquering remarkable challenges before eventually shipping her cherished pink Defender back to South Africa after reaching Chartwell in the UK. The entire journey was meticulously recorded in this up-close-and-personal diary journal. Access all the detailed juicy bits by clicking here.

Nonetheless, her story doesn’t conclude with this extraordinary voyage; it’s just the beginning. Fuelled by her indomitable spirit, she cohosted “Ladies in Landies,” a platform aimed at uniting and empowering women in the world of off-roading. The concept, initially conceived by Anthony Forgey, identified her as a natural leader for this empowering movement.

Ladies in Landies goes beyond being a mere recreational pursuit; it’s a dynamic initiative designed to foster companionship, self-worth, and independence among women. The group’s off-road events display their driving prowess while underscoring their ability to shape their own destinies. Grunewald elegantly encapsulates it in her own words. “Ladies in Landies began with a simple idea: bringing Lady Land Rover drivers together,” she said. Never judge a book by its cover – this attractive single mom nicknamed Alley isn’t just all flair but can actually keep up with boys as this news article on the event reports. With plans for expansion both online and through engaging events, the Ladies in Landies group envisions a future loaded with possibilities – from fundraising and social gatherings to motivational speaking engagements and appearances at various other events.

The inaugural event at De Wildt 4×4 track bore witness to a convoy of Land Rovers and passionate overland enthusiasts, setting the tone for the unity and empowerment that Ladies in Landies embodies. Fondly dubbed the ‘Pink Land Girl,’ Grunewald aimed to foster an environment of mutual learning, friendship, and skill enhancement while revelling in this shared passion.

Beyond fostering solidarity and empowerment, Ladies in Landies addresses a very vital and practical aspect of overlanding. Traditionally, driving responsibilities on road trips often fall to male partners, leaving questions unanswered about how women would face these challenges alone. This initiative equips women with skills and confidence to navigate even the harshest conditions, ensuring their ability to take charge when circumstances demand.

In essence, Ladies in Landies is more than just a mere off-road group. It’s a movement that embodies resourcefulness, innovation, and enthusiasm. Guided by Grunewald’s leadership, this initiative is poised to inspire and shape the journeys of countless women who dare to dream and conquer new pathways. As the off-road adage aptly states, they’re not just driving; they’re steering their dreams towards new horizons.
