Terrain Tamer’s new parabolic leaf springs

Terrain Tamer recently expanded their range of Parabolic Leaf Springs to now include Toyota Landcruiser 70/73/75 series models, utilising the same impressive parabolic design as the popular springs previously released for Toyota Hilux and Landcruiser 76/78/79 Series, Ford Ranger, Mazda BT50 and Mitsubishi Triton. What are the benefits of these new leaf springs.

  • New shape provides better axle articulation
  • Less interleaf friction
  • Allows easy spring compression & extension
  • Leaf springs remain separated without touching each other
  • Provides spring flex & good load bearing

Terrain Tamer’s unique design offers the best of both worlds, helping the spring to flex while still providing the strength needed to bear the weight of heavy loads. This is particularly useful in 4WD applications, carrying excessive load on the driveline or when challenged with difficult terrain. The flex allows the spring to give a little when the driver hits a bump in the road, allowing the differential housing to rotate with the springs and effectively providing a smoother ride, reducing the shock transferred to the crown wheel and pinion. Standard leaf packs stay set with almost no flex at all and consequently the same force would cause more shock to the vehicle and driver.

Essentially coupling a more comfortable ride with a strength not afforded to traditional comfort springs, Terrain Tamer’s parabolic springs are well suited to vehicles close to their GVM. They contain fewer leaves than regular leaf springs and get their name from their tapered parabolic design, meaning the spring is thicker in the centre and thinner toward the ends, rather than the usual linear style. This design eliminates the weight of often heavy, thick, traditional leaf packs, dramatically reduces the unsprung weight of the vehicle and frees up weight for heavier loads or towing.

Through extensive research and development, Terrain Tamer have found that the new shape provides better axle articulation, as well as almost no interleaf friction, allowing the spring to compress or extend with ease without touching each other until there is a reasonable load on the vehicle, up to 500kg.
