The Invisible Hero – Ironman 4×4 Suspension

Suspension is not something you often see when you first look at a rig.

But when you need it your suspension is the single most important upgrade you can make to your vehicle – and here’s why.

Original Equipment suspension is set up to support your vehicle for on-road conditions with a reasonable amount of weight. When you start to add vehicle accessories, attach a trailer or caravan and increase your load, the way the suspension handles the load changes drastically. Couple that with uneven surfaces and off-road conditions, the OEM suspension can more often than not, handle the additional strain.

Upgrading your suspension, especially when heading off-road can be the difference between a comfortable, enjoyable ride or a harrowing experience.

But what suits your needs?

Step one is calculating your weight requirements. You don’t want to fit Super class suspension, when you only need Light class. It will ruin the ride comfort of your vehicle if it is harder sprung than it needs to be. That being said, you don’t want it the other way around either. Overloaded suspension is severely detrimental to your vehicle’s road holding abilities and as a result the safety of you and your family.

When your load changes, so should your springs. Any heavy accessories or towing load added to your vehicle, changes the handling and overall safety when driving.

The vehicle’s springs must be matched to the load for optimum ride height and body control. Ironman 4×4 offer a range of springs to match the additional loads whether they are constant or temporary. When you start kitting out your vehicle, take into consideration the kerb weight and how much load you are adding, this will change what level of strength you need.

Below is an image with the different spring load options offered by Ironman 4×4. To calculate how much weight you have added as an percentage, you can use the following formula: % Weight added = (((Weight of accessories + Gross Vehicle Mass) / Gross Vehicle Mass) x 100)) – 100.

Once you have calculated the weight requirements of your rig’s suspension. step two is determining which type of terrain your vehicle will be used most often on.

The terrain you travel most, determines what type of shock absorber is right for you!

Forces generated by a loaded vehicle in rough terrain versus a lightly loaded vehicle in smooth terrain, differ greatly and can be considerably higher. Creating safe and appropriate dynamic handling at higher than original weights requires careful consideration. The range of Ironman 4×4 shock absorbers are designed to cover all terrains and possess the correct amount of damping resistance to provide a safe and comfortable ride.

At this point, you’ve looked at your weight requirements and the terrain you will be taking on. Now you need to decide if you want a soft or firm ride. Soft suspension will be more comfortable, but firm suspension will result in the vehicle handling better. In step three we look at different damping rates for the Ironman 4×4 shock absorbers.

Your preferred ride style is important to know when selecting the level of valving resistance in your shock absorbers.
