The dust is finally settling. After twelve months of navigating rocky ascents, corrugated gravel highways, and the occasional deep sand trap, the engines are cooling down. The ticking of hot metal is the only sound as the African sun dips below the horizon. 2025 has been a year of grit and gears, a year where we tested our limits and the limits of our machines. As we engage the handbrake for the festive break, the team at SA4x4 wants to take a moment to check the rearview mirror and offer a salute to the people who make this journey worthwhile.
To Our Partners in Adventure
This platform runs on the support of the industry’s heavyweights, and we owe a massive debt of gratitude to our clients. You are the engineers, the fabricators, and the innovators who keep our rigs moving when the map turns blank.
We know that the economic terrain has arguably been the toughest obstacle of the year. In a harsh financial climate where margins are squeezed, budgets are scrutinised, and the market is volatile, your loyalty to our brand stands out. We are humbled that, despite the economic headwinds, you have chosen to keep placing your advertorials and promotions with us. Thank you for your continued support and for powering through the tough times alongside us.
Thank you to the manufacturers who redefined the pickup landscape this year. The launch of next-generation models showed us a revolution in toughness, while established platforms continue to carry the legacy of true off-road capability. To those continuing to push the boundaries with their utility vehicles and SUVs, giving us vehicles that are as smart as they are strong.
A massive shout-out to the technical wizards in suspension solutions. Your systems, whether for heavy-hauling workhorses or family adventure vehicles, have smoothed out the roughest trails and kept us level when fully loaded.
We salute the energy experts for powering our off-grid ambitions. Your lithium solutions and battery management systems mean we can keep the lights on and the drinks cold in the deepest bush. To the outfitters, thank you for ensuring we are always equipped for the worst-case scenario with top-tier recovery gear and upgrades.
From the cooling reliability of premium fridges to the rugged protection of aluminium canopies and the precision of driving lights, you provide the kit that gives us the confidence to go further. To the innovators advancing component design and creating specialized wheels for enthusiasts – thank you for trusting us to tell your stories.
To Our Readers: The Real Explorers

To you, the SA4x4 readership: thank you for your loyalty. You are a unique breed. You are the ones who debate tyre pressures at braais until midnight, who know the difference between a diff-lock and traction control, and who aren’t afraid to get grease under your fingernails.

Thank you for trusting our reviews, whether we are testing new all-terrain tyres or critiquing a suspension lift. Thank you for showing up in your thousands at off-road festivals and enthusiast gatherings. Your passion is palpable. You are the people who don’t mind a little mud on the fenders because you know it is a badge of honour. Your thirst for knowledge and adventure drives us to dig deeper, test harder, and write better.
Navigating the Rough Terrain

We know, however, that the trail isn’t always scenic. 2025 has dealt some heavy blows. To those in our community who have lost loved ones this year, or who have faced health and financial battles that felt like a steep, loose rocky climb with no traction: we stand with you.
The empty seat in the 4×4 is felt most keenly during the holidays. The silence in the cab can be deafening. Yet overlanding teaches us one thing, it is resilience. When you are bogged down to the chassis rails in black cotton soil, you don’t walk away. You winch yourself out. It takes time, it takes sweat, and sometimes it takes a helping hand from a convoy mate, but you do get out.
The track continues. We promise you, the view from the top of the next pass will be worth the climb. Do not lose heart.
Check Your Convoy

This season is often touted as the “most wonderful time of the year,” but for many, it is the hardest. The statistics are sobering: depression and suicide rates peak during this period. Overlanding is often about self-reliance, about having the tools to fix your own problems, but it is also about the convoy. You never leave a mate behind.
If you are feeling isolated, depressed, or unable to see a way through the obstacle, please reach out. There is no bravery in suffering in silence. Call a friend, a family member, or a professional. There is zero shame in asking for a recovery.
If you see a mate who has gone quiet, key the radio. Check in. A simple “Howzit, you okay?” can save a life. Your life is the most important rig you own – maintain it, care for it, and don’t try to navigate the dark patches alone.
Safety First, Budget Second

As you head out to the bush, the beach, or the mountains, please practice the safety you preach. Check your rig. Inspect those ball joints, check your tyre age, and ensure your recovery gear is accessible. Drive with the caution that experience brings. We want every single one of you back online reading our reviews in 2026.
Oh yes, and a word on the wallet: be financially responsible. We all want those new General Grabber tyres, that Dastek Unichip power upgrade, or that shiny new Quick Pitch rooftop tent. But don’t redline your credit card to get them. Safety gear comes first; the luxury mods can wait.
The “silly season” often leads to silly financial decisions. Don’t start January with a financial hangover that lasts all year. Enter the New Year with financial traction, not bogged down in debt.
The Road Ahead

2026 is gearing up to be a massive year for our industry. We are already prepping for the Caravan Show early next year, which promises plenty of crossover tech for the overlanding community. There are new vehicle launches on the horizon, and we are keeping a close eye on the new Prado and the evolving bakkie market. New trails are waiting to be mapped and new horizons to chase.
From the entire crew at SA4x4 – from the photographers hanging out of windows to the writers testing suspension travel – we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
May your differentials stay cool, your batteries stay charged, and your travels be filled with prosperity and health.
Go explore, stay safe, and we will see you on the trail.
Over and out,
The SA4x4 Team
