Some thirty kilometres northwest of Cape Town, close to Melkbosstrand, you’ll find the Koeberg Power Station. It is the only nuclear power station in Africa, and it is also the location of a unique 4×4 trail. Koeberg is surrounded by three thousand hectares of private game reserve, and, once a year, 4×4 owners get the chance to drive the roads and trails that run through this pristine area. This is part of NSRI Melkbosstrand’s fund-raising drive, which was held this year in October − and we were lucky enough to take part!
Vehicles begin leaving on the trail from 08h30, setting off every half-hour or so, in groups of 15. We left in the 09h30 group – a good time to start, as it gave us time to enjoy some coffee, but still early enough to miss the wind that often picks up. The trail winds through fynbos, and we passed herds of eland and curious springbok along the way. There’s a stop for a toilet break and a stroll along the magnificent untouched beach, too.
