Parabolic Leaf Springs

Terrain Tamer have recently expanded their range of Parabolic Leaf Springs to include Ford Ranger, Mazda BT50, Mitsubishi Triton and Toyota Hilux and Landcruiser 76/78/79 Series models, utilising their impressive parabolic design and adding to their extensive existing suspension range.

Applying modern technology to a well-established idea to provide a quieter and more comfortable ride, Terrain Tamer’s parabolic design contains fewer leaves than regular leaf springs and get their name comes from their tapered parabolic design, meaning the spring is thicker in the centre and thinner toward the ends, rather than the usual linear design. Eliminating the weight of often heavy, thick traditional leaf packs, the parabolic design dramatically reduces the unsprung weight of the vehicle.

The Parabolic design also works to help the spring remain flexible, yet still strong enough to bear the weight of heavy loads. This is particularly useful in 4WD applications, when carrying excessive load on the driveline or when challenged with difficult terrain, as the flexibility allows the spring to give a little when the driver hits a bump in the road, allowing the differential housing to rotate with the springs and effectively reducing the shock transferred to the crown wheel and pinion. Standard leaf packs stay set with almost no flex at all, and the same force would cause more shock to the vehicle and driver.

Through extensive research and development, Terrain Tamer have also found that the new shape allows for smoother ride, with better axle articulation, as well as almost no interleaf friction, minimising any issues with rust build up, one of the major causes of failure in standard leaf springs. The parabolic design allows the spring to compress or extend with ease, without the leaves touching each other until there is a reasonable load on the vehicle, up to 500kg.
