Rim Wreckers & Road Rage: Surviving South Africa’s Pothole Season

What every off-roader and urban adventurer needs to know to stay on track – and on budget

If your steering’s started to shimmy or your rims are feeling rough around the edges, there’s a good chance you’ve hit one of South Africa’s most persistent road hazards – the pothole. And with the May rains softening up our tar like a riverbed after a thunderstorm, it’s officially pothole season.

Dylan Petzer, National Vice Chairman of the Tyre, Equipment and Parts Association (TEPA), says motorists are dodging craters with Mario Kart-level intensity. “And when you lose, your wallet feels it,” he warns.

But here’s the kicker: it’s not always your tyres that take the beating. “In nearly 80% of cases, it’s the rims that get bent, cracked, or written off completely,” says Petzer. “And if you think that’s cosmetic, think again – rim damage can mess with your alignment, steering and suspension. That’s when things get technical – and costly.”

The Rim Risk: More than Just a Ding

In Gauteng alone, tyre centres have seen a marked uptick in pothole-related damage – with rim replacements doubling in recent years. Moreover, while a brand-new rim might sound like the obvious fix, Petzer says that’s not always necessary. “A professional repair from an SABS-approved and ISO 9001-accredited specialist can restore your rim and your ride – without shredding your budget.”

Street-Smart Tips from the Tyre Pros

Before you find yourself nursing a wounded wheel, TEPA suggests keeping these essential tips in mind:

  • Steer clear of puddles – They’re not innocent roadside pools. They hide potholes better than a bush mechanic hides spare parts.
  • Avoid hard braking over potholes – Slamming the brakes increases the damage when impact is inevitable.
  • Pay attention to strange vibrations – If your seat, steering wheel or floorboards start humming, your car’s trying to tell you something.
  • Trust your gut – If something feels off, don’t wait. Get to a TEPA-accredited centre for a proper once-over.

Here’s a Claiming Win: SANRAL’s Got Your Back (Well Sometimes…)

Have you been struck by a pothole on a national road? You might be eligible for a damage claim from SANRAL – provided the road falls under their jurisdiction. Petzer says the process takes a bit of admin, but it’s worth a shot.

You Can Claim If:

  • The pothole was on a SANRAL-managed national route (like the N1 or N3).
  • You can prove the pothole caused the damage.
  • You submit a complete claim with photo evidence and repair costs.

You Cannot Claim If:

  • The incident occurred on a municipal or provincial road (that’s for local government).
  • You lack proper evidence (photos, time, place, invoices, etc.).

To Submit a Claim To SANRAL:

  1. Report the pothole via the SANRAL website or contact centre.
  2. Compile a claim with:
    • Date, time, and precise location of the incident
    • Photos of the pothole and vehicle damage
    • Repair invoices
    • Your vehicle and personal details
  3. Await SANRAL’s assessment – they might inspect the scene or vehicle.

Bottom Line

Potholes are a fact of life in South Africa, whether you’re on tar or transitioning to gravel. But you don’t have to let them wreck your ride or your budget. Be proactive, go to reputable repairers, and remember – replace only when you must, repair when you can.

All that said, remember to keep those rims round, and stay the course.

Have you encountered a pothole that challenged your 4×4’s resilience? Whether it was a minor jolt or a major rim repair, your experiences can offer valuable insights to fellow adventurers.
