New Model: Pajero Sport

All new for 2017, the long awaited Mitsubishi Pajero Sport will be launched in South Africa towards year-end with a brand-new engine, gearbox and chassis, to challenge the Fortuner head-on. As far as the spec sheet goes, the new Pajero Sport may have what it takes to dethrone SA’s SUV king.

All-new styling is a result of a ‘form follows function’ approach so as not to impact on the Pajero Sport’s rugged nature and off-road capability. LED headlamps and daytime running lights illuminate the road while the ‘shield’ grille gives the midsize SUV an impressive stance. Available with up to seven seats in a spacious cabin, the Sport has been designed with a more luxurious interior feel, more space and more refinement. Safety was also a priority in its design, and the Australian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) awarded the Pajero five stars.

Under the hood, the Sport shares its punchy 2.4-litre turbo diesel mill with the Triton, pushing out 133kW and 430Nm of torque. For better fuel economy, emissions and refinement, an eight-speed gearbox was added with a wide ratio spread and slick shift. Like its Triton sibling, the Pajero Sport gets a new version of Mitsubishi’s Super- Select II 4WD-system which uses a viscous 4WD system with a centre diff-lock to spread torque.

The new Pajero Sport line-up for South Africa will consist only of high specification 4×4 and 4×2 models all mated to the eightspeed auto box – no manual option is mentioned. Pricing and specifications are to be confirmed, though Mitsubishi has stated their pricing will be highly competitive.
