New Models: Fiat Fullback

Fiat is making a move into one of SA’s most competitive vehicle segments with the introduction of their Fullback. The new range of 4×4 and 4x2s is the first Italian foray into this highly-competitive market.

Fitting alongside the rest of the Fiat Professional range of commercial vehicles, the Fullback is based entirely on the new double cab chassis of the upcoming Mitsubishi Triton, but uses the previous generation Mitsubishi engines and gearboxes in a bid to bring down cost. These cost-saving measures will allow for what Fiat describes as “extremely competitive” prices, undercutting the price of an equivalent double cab Hilux 4×4 2.8GD-6 by over R27k.

Unfortunately, the top-of-the-range model, the 131kW diesel engine, produces lots of turbo lag and can’t match the Hilux on performance (despite what the spec sheet says), reputation, or luxury. But thanks to the proven Mitsubishi engines, reliability should be extremely sound.

As with the Mitsubishi’s on which they are based, the Fullbacks all use a five speed, manual gearbox; while the 4×4 option gets a rear diff-lock as standard, and manual “donkey lever” actuation for the 4×4 system.

A load capacity of 1100kg for the single cab is on par with market competition.

Interior options include anything from basic work bakkie specs (air con is standard), to full leather and infotainment systems in the top models. The Fiat Fullback will be distributed and serviced exclusively by the Fiat Chrysler group and should hit showrooms as soon as July 1st 2016.
