New Models : VW T6 Van

The VW T2 and T3 vans have a long and noble tradition of overlanding in Africa. Over 280 000 of them were sold since VW started building the T2 at Uitenhage, stopping only in 2002 with the last T3. They’re as much a part of our tradition as Ouma Rusks and David Kramer, though he was apparently too busy to usher in the new T6 version with a bit of song-and-dance. Pity.

For all the talk of bold horizontal lines and VW DNA grille, it’s still a smartly finished bread bin equipped with LED lights on the corners, majoring on interior space and practicality, with lots of seating combos and the option of taking them all out to create a small dance hall.

Upgraded interiors, better connectivity and more range-wide safety gear are the order of the T6 range. Standard kit now includes the Multi-Collision Braking System (auto braking in an accident scenario), LED lights, Hill-hold control, in addition to ABS, traction control, plus driver- and passenger airbags.

Engines are all 2.0-litre diesel and a carry-over from the T5 range, in 75kW, 103kW and 132kW versions. Running gear is either five- or six-speed manual or six-speed DSG, the latter now more widely dispersed through the range. There are long wheelbase and short wheelbase versions, and pick-ups, commercial vans and crew cab versions to complement the lifestyle-oriented Kombi and range-topping Caravelle. The latter has come in for the most dramatic rework, and includes a revised dash, touchscreen infotainment system, piano-black trim, extra stash spaces, the signature folding rear table and seating for seven in leather shrouded seats.
