There’s a new contender in the bakkie wars—one that’s been sharpened, toughened, and tuned to thrive in Africa’s most unforgiving conditions. Say hello to the new Nissan Navara PRO-4X Warrior, developed in partnership with Australian engineering powerhouse Premcar. With beefed-up underpinnings, enhanced off-road capability, and enough on-road refinement to handle everyday duties, this is the most rugged Navara yet—and it’s headed straight for South African soil.

Developed to suit the demanding terrains of Africa and Australia, the Warrior is more than just a styling exercise. It’s a full-throttle response to those who demand real off-road performance from their double cabs without sacrificing comfort, safety, or modern tech.

Built to Perform

At the heart of the Warrior is Nissan’s proven 2.5-litre DDTi turbo diesel engine, delivering 140kW and 450Nm of torque. That’s more than enough grunt for towing, sand driving, or tackling remote farm tracks. It’s also paired to a 7-speed automatic gearbox with low-range 4WD, giving the Warrior smooth delivery across a wide spectrum of terrain types.
The bakkie’s 80-litre fuel tank, matched with diesel efficiency, gives it a long reach between fill-ups—an important advantage when your travels take you far from the tar.
What sets the Warrior apart is its thoroughly reworked suspension system, tailored by Premcar to handle real-world punishment. It gets taller springs, tougher dampers, and recalibrated ride dynamics, offering 232mm of ground clearance—up from the standard PRO-4X’s 221mm. That extra height, combined with longer wheel travel, allows the Warrior to crawl, climb, and carry like never before.
The track has been widened both front and rear, increasing lateral stability—crucial when traversing rocky trails or loose, corrugated gravel. LT 275/65 R17 MAXXIS RAZR all-terrain tyres complete the package, delivering serious bite in the rough while still offering comfort and grip on-road.
Add a reworked rear suspension setup for improved load control, and you’ve got a bakkie that not only hauls gear securely but also keeps its composure under duress.
Form Meets Function

The Warrior doesn’t shout—it growls. Visually, it’s set apart with black detailing across the grille, roof rails, door handles, and side steps, along with red accents and the signature black-and-red Nissan badge. These styling cues aren’t just for show; they signal the presence of something more purposeful beneath the surface.
Inside, it’s a similar story. The black Warrior-embroidered seats with red stitching strike a balance between durability and flair. An 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a customisable 7-inch digital driver display, makes the cabin as tech-friendly as it is tough. Add dual-zone climate control, and the Warrior starts to feel like a bakkie that’s equally suited to school runs and Swartberg Pass missions.
Safety When it Counts

Off-road ability is only half the battle; driver confidence comes from knowing the vehicle’s got your back. The Warrior is armed with Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility suite, a comprehensive safety package that includes:
- Forward collision warning
- Blind spot monitoring
- Lane departure warning
- Intelligent Around-View Monitor with off-road mode
The Around-View system is particularly useful in rough terrain, offering a 360-degree view of the bakkie’s immediate surroundings—a genuine boon when navigating tight trails or lining up a tricky descent.
Further features like hill descent control, hill start assist, multiple airbags, and a reinforced chassis round out a package that’s built to endure—and protect.
Made for Africa

According to Nissan SA’s MD, Maciej Klenkiewicz, the Warrior is a perfect fit for South Africa’s all-purpose motoring needs. “Our love for bakkies is no secret. Whether it’s off-road exploration, worksite hauling, or cruising pothole-ridden urban streets, the Navara has long stood out. Now, with the Warrior, Premcar has taken it up a notch—creating what we believe is the toughest Navara yet.”
Premcar’s CEO, Bernie Quinn, echoes that sentiment. The Warrior wasn’t just tweaked for looks. It was thoroughly tested across thousands of kilometres, covering corrugations, muddy ruts, deep sand, steep inclines, and high-speed tar. “Whatever you throw at it, it handles with ease,” says Quinn.
The Warrior also represents a significant commitment to the local market. Based on the Navara already manufactured in Nissan’s Rosslyn plant, the Warrior is being positioned as a premium halo product—proof that the brand is serious about off-road credibility in Africa.
The vehicle will be backed by Nissan’s standard 6-year/150 000 km warranty, with Premcar’s upgrades covered by the same terms—a strong show of confidence in the product’s durability.
What’s Next?

With the Warrior joining Nissan’s local 4×4 lineup, the brand is tightening its grip on the adventure-ready double cab segment. There are also whispers of more special-edition models on the horizon.
As Nissan expands into new African export markets, including a recent launch in Egypt, the Navara remains a cornerstone of the brand’s strategy. Built by Africans, for Africans, the Navara PRO-4X Warrior is as much a statement of intent as it is a capable bakkie.
For those seeking a vehicle that can double as a weekday workhorse and weekend warrior—while taking on technical trails and unpredictable terrain with ease—the Navara PRO-4X Warrior stands ready.
